I either put the gameplay mechanics in a different environment or put a new spin on the genre. One of my favorite games I’ve made is Teddy Bears Vs. Bed Buds. I’m a big fan of tower defense games, so I wanted to make one that was slightly different. I decided on a game that’s set on top of a bed, where you build stuffed animals to attack the enemy bed bugs from getting to the sleeping child. What are the stages you go through to design a game? Well, the first step is getting my concept for the game. I was laying in my bed (fortunately without the bed bugs) when I came up with the Teddy Bears Vs. Bed Bugs concept. Once I’ve come up with a concept, the next step is the organization and planning of development stage. I write down all the ideas I have in a mind map and choose the best concepts, which fit together nicely, from there. This stage of only choosing the best parts is a stage that lots of developers find difficult. In game design, we have something called “Scope Creep”, where you essentially keep adding layer upon layer to your game and never end up finishing. This is the first stage where I find using a mind map particularly useful. If you’re making a game that is completely new with no existing similar concept, it’s best to prototype the idea first, to check that it’s actually fun. Prototyping is essentially testing the most basic version of your game, to test whether the concept is good. It’s not worth pursuing a game idea when the most basic gameplay isn’t actually fun. When prototyping, you make a game that represents your core idea. If I was prototyping Mario, for example, I would make a game with a character that can move and jump, and could kill enemies if it landed on them. I wouldn’t even include art or music in the prototyping stage, because you may find that certain mechanics aren’t functional, which means you may never use those assets. Once the prototype is coded, its time to test and evaluate the validity of the idea.   Normally, I get all of the coding and mechanics done first as I like to see my game work as early as possible. I work with the Unity game engine, coding in C#. I find that Unity has a lot of useful features to make implementing mechanics easier (especially 2D). C# is a solid language that not only works well with Unity but has other capabilities, like Desktop Application development.  After I program the gameplay and have tested to see whether it’s fun to play, I move onto the artwork, the design, and the polish. Since I consider myself a programmer by trade, this part usually takes me a while, but I still enjoy it. After all of this is done, I play and test the game a lot, trying to find and eliminate any bugs. Finally, at this point, I’m ready to release my game!   Once your games are ready, how do you get the word out about them?   As of right now, all my games are available to play for free on web game sites like Kongregate and Game Jolt. I hope to start collaborating with a team in the future and I think Google Drive will be perfect for that too, allowing the easy sharing and co-editing of files. Although I haven’t used it extensively, I also think MeisterTask is a great tool for game development teams. Being able to take your MindMeister project and in just a few clicks, share all of the tasks at hand with your team, is very convenient. This way everyone is on the same page and can see the real progress of the game. I really like the ability to add images to my ideas. Even mind maps are still a bunch of text, and having the ability to embed pictures, like concept artwork and inspiration, into the ideas, makes it much easier to look at and get a good overview of development, at a glance. It also makes it easier to find things, as I can quickly locate my ideas on environments, characters, and UI design. In addition, all of this can be done either via my desktop or via my mobile device. Below, for example, is how the above mind map looks on my Android device: Once the game is all planned out, how do you go about building it? After your game is planned out, it’s time to build it! If you’re making a game that is completely new with no existing similar concept, it’s best to prototype the idea first, to check that it’s actually fun. Prototyping is essentially testing the most basic version of your game, to test whether the concept is good. It’s not worth pursuing a game idea when the most basic gameplay isn’t actually fun. When prototyping, you make a game that represents your core idea. If I was prototyping Mario, for example, I would make a game with a character that can move and jump, and could kill enemies if it landed on them. I wouldn’t even include art or music in the prototyping stage, because you may find that certain mechanics aren’t functional, which means you may never use those assets. Once the prototype is coded, its time to test and evaluate the validity of the idea.   Normally, I get all of the coding and mechanics done first as I like to see my game work as early as possible. I work with the Unity game engine, coding in C#. I find that Unity has a lot of useful features to make implementing mechanics easier (especially 2D). C# is a solid language that not only works well with Unity but has other capabilities, like Desktop Application development.  After I program the gameplay and have tested to see whether it’s fun to play, I move onto the artwork, the design, and the polish. Since I consider myself a programmer by trade, this part usually takes me a while, but I still enjoy it. After all of this is done, I play and test the game a lot, trying to find and eliminate any bugs. Finally, at this point, I’m ready to release my game!   Once your games are ready, how do you get the word out about them?   As of right now, all my games are available to play for free on web game sites like Kongregate and Game Jolt. I make a little bit of money each time an ad plays before the game loads. However, promotion is arguably the most difficult part of development. You can make a great game, but if you don’t market it right, no one will know. On these websites, typically you get a boost at release from the new games category, but it normally declines from that point. Before Oprah Winfrey was famous, she had a very difficult childhood that helped her become who she is today. Her story started on January 29, 1954 in Mississippi. When Oprah was about 6 years old, she went to live with her mom in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She then went to live with her father when she was in her mid-teens and she saw a positive outcome. When Oprah was young, she was sexually assaulted by some of her relatives. Throughout Oprahs life she has had struggles from, her extremely rough childhood: the sexual abuse that her relatives caused, her rise to stardom and TV stardom. Her childhood had troubled her and was very rough, but it was able to shape her into the person that she is today. Throughout Oprahs life, she has struggled with weight gain and weight loss. Everytime Oprahs weight was too high, her self confidence was really low. Oprah would set a goal and try really hard to achieve that goal but one time she was hiking and hurt her ankle, making it to where she couldnt work out for a long period of time. During the time she couldnt work out, her weight increased drastically, which decreased her self-esteem. She eventually joined onto Weight Watchers as their spokeswoman. Oprah was on the program for 17 months when she saw a drastic change in her weights. She would count her points instead of counting the calories of the food that she ate. Oprah was 62 when she was a size 12 and had lost 42.5 pounds. Oprah had a lot of cravings during her diets but she was able to overcome those cravings in order to stay on her diets. In one of her interviews, Oprah said, I was really, really skinny, she recalls. I was eating every single thing I wanted, and I was still dropping weight (Green). She was later diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which was why she was able to eat all that she wanted while still losing weight. When she found out about her hyperthyroidism, she started taking medicine which made her start gaining weight and dropped her self esteem drastically. Oprah was able to become a shareholder of Weight Watchers which helped her regain control over her weight When she regained control over her weight, she became more positive towards eating food and she had a better outlook about her weight. Oprah Winfrey has won a lot of awards but one specific award she won is The Elie Wiesel Foundation For Humanity Honors. This award is given to people who have created programs that promote acceptance, understanding and equality. She was a recipient of this award. The award recognized Ms. Winfreys efforts to carry on the work, message and legacy of Elie Wiesel through her commitment to humanitarian service (Elie). Elie Wiesel was a World War 2 veteran and won the nobel peace prize but passed away so his wife took over the foundation. His wife gave Oprah the award because she was good friends with her husband. Another reason why Oprah got this award was because she gives a voice to the voiceless and her dedication. Another award that Oprah Winfrey received is the Cecil B DeMille Award. She was nominated for the award because people believed that she was an amazing actress. The characters must use deception to obtain good things, escape bad situations, or to play cruel hilarious ticks on other people. One example of deception is when Viola clothes herself in mens clothing in order to obtain a job under the Duke of Illyria, Orsino. During another scene Sir Andrew, Fabian, Maria, and Sir Toby Belch trick Malvolio into making a fool of himself. A third example of deception is when Feste the jester disguises himself as Sir Topas and taunts Malvolio. Each of these scenes and characters helps depict the different uses of deception. Gender equality has been debated throughout society, and in a more narrow sense, in the Roman Catholic Church. Men are the dominant gender when looking at the Roman Catholic religion, as they have the authority and power to hold a church session and women do not. Today, many women are fighting back and questioning the gender bias that is present within the Roman Catholic religion. Although women have come a long way in society, women seem to still have an inferior role in the church. The sacrament of Holy Orders is reserved only to men, Christs twelve disciples are all men, and although the Catholic church promotes respect and equality for all, their teachings seem to be flawed. This is the narrator describing the exterior of the Usher home, focusing on the flaws; a debilitated condition of an old mansion. The mental illnesses Roderick is suffering from such as anxiety and depression, directly describes the characteristics of the House of Usher; dull, sluggish crumbling and debilitating. The fissure in the wall of the home is equivalen t to the fissure in Rodericks mind. Every state of mind and body demonstrates itself as a characteristic of the homes exterior. The house is neglected, similar to the health of Roderick and his sister Madeline. The house itself becomes the figurative example of the characters; the house is a projection of the characters distressed personalities. As the mind and body of Roderick and Madeline starts to deteriorate, the Usher home begins to decay. The Fall of the House of Usher has many themes, one of them being insanity. Each character seems to be engulfed in their own state of mind, creating illusions and turning them into reality. The home seems to play with the characters minds, but Madeline and Roderick trap themselves in the house filled with their own fear. The narrator acknowledges that simple, natural objects can have complete power over us, Roderick has been dominated by all things in his home. He is in a constant battle with these things and his mind; in this battle he is a loser (Weisheng 291) Roderick is enchanted and terrified by the inscrutable things around him, he suffers from despair, and mental breakdowns, showing little signs of agency (Weisheng 299) Unpleasant ideas and obsessive thoughts can control our minds and are difficult to get rid of. Involuntary images and visual memories are prominent in many types of psychopathology. Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder, other anxiety disorders, depression, and psychosis frequently report repeated visual intrusions corresponding to a small number of real or imaginary events, usually extremely vivid, detailed, and with highly distressing content. When suffering from a mental illness, trying to see life in a brighter and more positive perspective can sometimes be an impossible task. Roderick has fallen into a severe mental depression. He suffers from various nervous disorders; he is a hypochondriac and hypersensitive to most stimuli. Roderick is mentally disturbed by something and becomes agitated and restless (Weisheng 293) Usher describes his illness as a family evil, he believes his depression has been transferred through generations of bad genetics. Rodericks hypochondria and mental instability lead him to believe he is physically ill without any medical diagnoses from a doctor. Madelines sickness is also compared to utter depression, she suffers from apathy; gradually wasting away and becomes bed ridden until her imaginary death. Isolation also plays a great role in this short story; isolation is a symptom of depression and anxiety. Roderick and his sister Madeline self-isolate and are completely removed from normality. The extreme separation brings the family members closer together, to a supernatural point that is incomprehensible to any outsider. The twins feed off one another, creating nothing but negative energy in the home which causes them to be physically and mentally ill. I had learned, too, the very remarkable fact, that the stem of the Usher race, all time-honored as it was, had put forth, at no period, any enduring branch; in other words, that the entire family lay in the direct line of descent, and had always, with very trifling and very temporary variation, so lain (Poe 2). Roderick and Madeline are the last of the Usher family. They both are suffering from odd illnesses which could be a direct cause of the intermarriage in the family; a possible genetic cause of their illness. Rodericks mental problems come from his family history, it is believed that he is haunted by memories of a remote and repressed past, he now suffers from a traumatic mind because of his unresolved past (Weisheng 293). The twins relationship is mysterious, bizarre and almost incestuous; the bond that they share as brother and sister is powerful. It is believed that twins are one person split into two, unable to survive without one another; their bond exceeds even death. Without Madeline, Rodericks physical and mental condition begin to deteriorate even more, he suffers from a severe distress of the soul. Submission to God required man to follow the teachings and rules of the Church which had been established on earth by Jesus (Rietbergen, 1998). The church and the state were inextricably linked and while the church expected the government to validate its doctrines, the government relied on the church to preach its politics on the pulpit. Politicians need the backing of a significant portion of the population and Christianity provided the Roman Emperor Constantine with a much needed support-base as well as a platform from which he could reach his subjects. Constantine and the emperors who followed him promoted Christianity and therefore made it a partner in the controlling of the Roman Empire. The privileges that the state afforded the church led to a vindication of imperial authority. While Christianity had previously been opposed to Roman rule, church leaders and their followers now acknowledged the divine right to rule of the Emperor. Christian leaders took up some leadership roles in the Empire. The Christian bishops who were in essence supervisors were given a role in the local administration of law. A strong and unified church had tremendous political advantage as long as its loyalty to the Empire was unquestionable. The strong Christian attachment to the empire led to increased loyalty to the Emperor by the Christian subjects. Wolin (2006) states that to early Christians, there was a major distinction between political and religious order in that the latter alone controlled the practices of redemption. Therefore, while the government provided peace and order and an environment which fostered prosperity, it did not advance the salvation of the believers. This changed as the church gained more political power and therefore demonstrated that the power could promote the divine mission of the Church. An important development is that there was an equating of Roman law with Gods law. The state could in effect define church doctrine and people were obliged to follow it. The Roman Empire was renowned for their military adventures which were characterized by repression and domination over conquered territories. Augustine (1631) defended the use of power through Christianity. He argued that unity was a desirable quality of society since it contributed to an environment of peace which made a Christian life possible. Augustine endorsed the use of righteous persecution since according to him; power and love were not mutually inconsi stent. Such a stance was supported by the Romans since they could make exercise great cruelty and punishment so long as it was motivated by a spirit of charity. Christianity served to reinforce imperial authority since it treated the empire as an instrument of divine policy. It helped to strengthen political authority and hence increase the hold of the Roman Empire over its subjects. This is because the religion taught that the existing political order was from God and that it was for the good of the Christians. This idea was especially emphasized by the apostle Paul who stated that Christians should be subject to the governing authorities. Wolin (2006) states that the Apostle Paul put up a strong case for political obedience by stating that the powers that be are ordained of God whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God (p.89). Christians acknowledged the Roman state as the bearer of order in the world. Those powers appointed in human society had the d ivine right to exercise authority over the lesser and to command their obedience. Augustine (1631) argued that the creation of the Roman monarch and of the advent of the pax Romana was not an act of man but rather willed by God. This notion that the Roman empire was founded by God and invested by him with a redemptive purpose for all humanity led to great allegiance being paid to the Roman Empire. Christianity helped to develop a political consciousness that was mostly advantageous to the Roman Empire authority. This consciousness was emphasized by Augustine (1631) who viewed the Roman Empire authority as the vehicle for human fulfillment. If the Roman Empire could facilitate the Christian life, then politics was to be seen as a central aspect of Christian life. The Roman Empire had a mission to unite the whole human race under one from of authority and since this assist in converting the world to Christ, the Empire had Christian sanction. Augustine declared that those in authority have the power to command their subjects to do things which might be contrary to customs or constitutions. He states that it is lawful for a king in the city he reigns over to command that which never any prince before him has (p.129). Christianity assisted the Roman Empire to continue with its expansionist ambitions. Once it had become the state religion in Rome, Christianity created the conditions for a fanatical use of political and military force to obtain uniformity in the realm and to resolve conflicts by force. Augustine of Hippo elaborated a theory of Just War which was an effort to control, tame, and use violence constructively (Coward Smith, 2004). Augustine stated that if unjust conditions exist, then peace can be achieved through war. The Roman Empire was therefore justified in its use of violent upheaval to restore peace to its integrity. Christianity seemed to imbue life with a meaning and purpose beyond the simple material things of everyday reality. The Roman Empire was rife with social inequality with the gap between the rich and the poor very wide. Christian teachings offered relief for the poor and advocated for contentment. The religion did not call for a revolution or social upheaval but rather emphasized on a sense of spiritual equality for all people (Augustine, 1631). Roman rulers were able to pacify their subjects by use of religious literature. Christianity teaches that human beings should bear with their suffering on earth for they have rewards that await them in heaven. Clark (2004) states that Christianity diverted the attention of the masses from their present suffering to happiness in heaven. Christianity enabled the Roman Empire to maintain control of the people in the face of calamities since they would be urged in such moments to seek the divine will of God. The Church issued treatise which reminded the subjects of the Roman Empire of the special role given to the empire by God. Such treatises warned those undermining it and threatened them with eternal damnation (Coward Smith, 2004). While Christianity was a religion of peace, it also allowed politicians to engage in warfare. Coward and Smith (2001) document that the use of pax which was a political and military attempt to avoid war through domination. In such a context, the absence of war came about as a result of the overwhelming imbalance of power between Rome and its rivals which made the thoughts of violent confrontation unreasonable. Since the teachings of Christ emphasized peace, Christians supported this deterrence measure by the Roman Empire. Christianity made it possible for the Roman Empire to justify its Authoritarian rule. While early Christian communities were initially democratic in nature, the union of church and state led to the establishment of a hierarch. The power resided at the top of the ecclesiastical hierarchy with the faithful being required to pray, pay and obey. The Christian holy book, the bible, acted as a guide to the con duct of the followers of the faith in the Empire. The 10 commandments as articulated in the Old Testament acted as a source of Ethics in the Empire. Political leaders were guardians of the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) and they could evoke laws from the bible to justify their actions or to make people act in a manner that was beneficial to the Empire. The Decline of Roman Empire Christianity temporarily helped to reunite the once warring West and East Roman empire. However, the empire became permanent divided and the western empire collapsed in the fifth century as a result of foreign invasion. Romes decline was caused by centuries of civil war, corruption in politics and economic difficulties suffered by the Empires subjects. All this was compounded by the infiltration of Germanic peoples into Rome frontiers in the fourth and fifth centuries. The Battle of Adrianople in 378 AD where the Visigoths revolted against the Romans signaled the start of the end of the Roman Empire. The batt le resulted in the defeat of the mighty Roman army to barbarian hordes. The old Roman Empire in the west was therefore disintegrated. However, Roman civilization did not disappear and the organization of the Empire was preserved through the structure of the Roman Catholic Church and Roman law continued to form the basis for the Churchs law. As such, despite the collapse of Rome it still regained its status as the center of western Christianity and it continues to do this to date since Rome is the spiritual center of Catholicism. Conclusion This paper set out to discuss the influence of Christianity in the politics of the Roman Empire. The paper has shown that at the start, Roman popular religion was pagan and people were allowed to worship any god. Christianity which began as a small sect was outlawed since it did not permit the worship of the Emperor. During this period, the Christian Church remained pure and free from political influence until Constantines era. After this, it beca me a predominant force in Roman politics. This paper has suggested that it was political necessity that led to the rise of Christianity as the official Roman religion. As has been documented, Christianity played an important role in Roman Politics since it enabled political traditions to be legitimized by reference to religion. The paper has demonstrated how the idea of God as expressed through the Christian faith had a profound impact on political ideas in the Roman Empire.
